Andy Wood, a native of Carleton Place, Ontario, returned to his hometown with his wife after 13 years in Toronto due to the pandemic. He now works as Shopify's head of recruitment, leading a team of 10 people who focus on hiring for all 1,500 positions at the Ottawa-based company. Despite the challenges of remote work, Wood's team is as productive as ever, with the company implementing new tools and policies to enhance collaboration and communication. Shopify has also launched a comprehensive mentorship program to support its employees' career development and maintain its position as an employer of choice. The company has also made significant changes to its office spaces, now known as "ports," offering all the amenities of a traditional office environment with the added flexibility of being able to work from anywhere. As a result, 56% of Shopify staff no longer live within commuting distance of one of these ports, opening up the company to a wider talent pool and allowing employees to live where they wish.
